What is a SIP Trunk?

Good morning Pensacola! Have you ever wondered, “What is a SIP Trunk?”

It sounds like something an elephant would do at the watering hole doesn’t it?

If you’ve ever read anything about VoIP ( voice over internet protocol) , you’ve most likely run into the term “SIP”. I am going to explain what a SIP Trunk is, and give it to you in layman’s terms. In less than three paragraphs, you will have the answer to the question, “What is a SIP Trunk?”.

VoIP related acronyms you need to know what the letters stand for, but don’t have to understand:

  • SIP – Session Initiation Protocol.
  • VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol
  • ITSP – Internet Telephone Service Provider.

Now that you know the acronyms, a SIP Trunk is a type of VoIP used by an ITSP to deliver phone service to an end user.  Clear as mud right?

Understanding SIP trunking as a non technical person may take a little more explaining.  Traditionally, business phone systems work by connecting multiple employee phones to the outside world, using some type of telephone lines.  Many companies use POTs lines (Plain Old Telephone) lines purchased from a local carrier like AT&T. Sometimes you hear them called “analog lines” or “copper” lines.  Other larger companies may use “T1” or “PRI” lines which are just a bundle of several digital phone lines, with some additional functionality.  These are also purchased from a local carrier.
